Chivington, Colorado

thumb Chivington in 2007 from Colorado State Highway 96 State Highway 96 (Image:Chivington, Colorado 2007.jpg) '''Chivington''' is an unincorporated community (Unincorporated area) in Kiowa County (Kiowa County, Colorado), Colorado, United States. The U.S. Post Office (United States Postal Service) at Eads (Eads, Colorado) (ZIP Code 81036) now serves Chivington postal addresses.

Chivington was named for the Reverend Colonel John Chivington, who was celebrated as the hero of the 1862 Battle of Glorieta Pass and commanded the Volunteer Militia of the Colorado Territory that perpetrated the Sand Creek massacre, a slaughter of Native Americans (Native Americans in the United States) in a nearby gulch during the American Civil War. Chivington was lauded as a hero at first for Sand Creek, but as details of the massacre became known, he was officially reprimanded and Territorial Governor John Evans (John Evans (governor)) lost his job for encouraging Chivington.
