in the North and North-Eastern regions of Romania (Northern Bucovina and Bessarabia). Hoffmann participated actively in the Invasion of Poland (Invasion of Poland (1939)). In 1941, while retaining his other functions, he was also made acting Gauleiter of Upper Silesia, and also gained a seat in the Reichstag (Reichstag (German Empire)) as the next candidate on the list. From 1942 he undertook, as Martin Bormann's representative on the OKW's Unruh staff, personnel examinations in the service posts in the occupied eastern territories and Ukraine. In 1943 came Hoffmann's appointment to Gauleiter of Westphalia-South. In the same year, Hoffmann was appointed by Joseph Goebbels to manage his Reich Inspection for Civil Aerial Warfare Measures. Hoffmann, who did not enjoy widespread popularity even within the Nazi Party's top ranks owing to his arrogance and bossy manner, was said to have been a staunch Nazi right through to the war's (Second World War) end. Shortly before the war ended, in April 1945, Hoffmann dissolved the NSDAP and the ''Volkssturm'' in Westphalia-South and went into hiding. The dynasty began with Rabbi Avrohom Yaakov Friedman of Sadigura (Sadhora) now located in Ukraine, who was a son of Rabbi Israel Friedman of Ruzhin (Ruzhin (Hasidic dynasty)), the founder of the Ruzhiner dynasty. All Soviet Air Force aircraft passed to successor states: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The late 1970s had seen a lessening of tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union, called Détente. However by the 1980s Détente had ended with the invasion of Afghanistan. In 1981, Ronald Reagan became President of the United States and sought to defeat the USSR by leveraging the United States capitalist economic system to outproduce the communist Russians. The United States military was in a state of low moral after its loss in the Vietnam War, and President Reagan began a huge effort to out-produce the Soviets in military production and technology. In 1985, a new Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev took power. Gorbachev, knowing that the Soviet Union could no longer compete economically with the United States, implemented a number of reforms granting his citizens freedom of speech and introducing some capitalist reforms. Gorbachev and America's staunch anti-Communist president Ronald Reagan were even able to negotiate treaties limiting each side's nuclear weapons. Gorbachev also ended the policy of imposing Communism in Eastern Europe. In the past Soviet troops had crushed attempts at reform in places like Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Now, however, Eastern Europe was freed from Soviet domination. In Poland the Round Table Talks (Polish Round Table Talks) between the government and the Solidarity-led opposition led to semi-free elections in 1989 elections in Poland where anti-communist candidates won a striking victory sparked off a succession of peaceful anti-communist revolutions in Central (Central Europe) and Eastern Europe known as the Revolutions of 1989. Soon, Communist regimes throughout Europe collapsed. In Germany, after calls from Reagan to Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, the people of East and West Berlin tore down the wall and East Germany's Communist government was voted out. East and West Germany unified to create the country of Germany, with its capital in the reunified Berlin. The changes in Eastern Europe led to calls for reform in the Soviet Union itself. A failed coup by hard-liners led to greater instability in the Soviet Union, and the Soviet legislature, long subservient to the Communist Party, voted to abolish the Soviet Union in 1991. What had been the Soviet Union was divided into many republics. Although many slipped into authoritarianism, most became democracies. These new republics included Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. By the early 1990s, the West and Europe as a whole was finally free from Communism. Eastern Yiddish is split into Northern and Southern dialects. Northeastern Yiddish, also known as ''Litvish (Litvak)'' or ''Lithuanian Yiddish'', was spoken in the modern-day Baltic region as well as adjacent regions of Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. The Southern dialects are again subdivided: ''Mideastern'' or ''Polish Yiddish'' was spoken in Poland, western Galicia (Galicia (Eastern Europe)) and much of Hungary, while ''Southeastern'' or ''Ukrainian Yiddish'' was spoken elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Some authors use the term "Southeastern Yiddish" as a collective designation for both ''Poylish'' and ''Ukrainish'' while still applying the term Northeastern Yiddish to ''Litvish''. Ukrainian Yiddish was the basis for standard theater Yiddish, while Lithuanian Yiddish was the basis of standard literary and academic Yiddish. The latter differs slightly from Lithuanian Yiddish in that many words with oj in the standard have ej in Lithuanian Yiddish, e.g. וואוין Standard vojn , Lithuanian vejn .
