created in place of Thermal Power Station. Architects begin the construction for settlers of the Sumqayit Thermal Power Station. *1939 Foundations were built for synthetic rubber and chemical plants. *1940 All construction activities suspended with the start of the Great Patriotic War. *1941 Thermal Power Station is launched and Baku's oil industries received its first electricity. *1944 The construction of chemical and metallurgical plants. *1945 Sumqayit chemical plant produced its first production and the great construction wave has been started. *1949 Settlement awarded city status by Presidium of Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR *1955 Sumgayit Aluminum plant established *1957 Construction of scientific-research institutes and cultural centers, the city infrastructure is being developed. *1960 Europe's largest petrol-chemical plant construction has started *1970 The development of light and machine-building industries in the city. In 1935, the Soviet government decided to develop heavy industry in the Absheron Peninsula, and the future location of Sumgayit was chosen based on its proximity to Baku and its key position on existing railroad lines. Between 1938–1941, a thermal power station was constructed to power Baku's growing petroleum industry (Petroleum industry in Azerbaijan). This was soon followed by more heavy industries. Due to World War II the construction of the area stopped and resumed in 1944, when metallurgical and chemical plants (chemical industry) were constructed and put into operation. The first production of ''Sumgayit Chemical Plant'' led to a rapid growth and construction boom, creating a new job market, and a need for a resident population. In 1949, Sumgayit gained official city status according to resolution of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan SSR. In 1952, a tube-rolling plant delivered its first produce thus developing black metallurgy production in Azerbaijan. The same year, another new Synthetic Rubber (Synthetic rubber) Production Plant started its operations producing ethylene obtained from oil (petroleum). Operations at ''Sumgayit Steel Processing Plant'' and ''Sumgayit Aluminium Plant'' were commenced in 1953 and 1955, respectively. In 1957–1955, a number of scientific research facilities and cultural centers were built, leading to further development of the city infrastructure. In 1960, authorities started building the Petroleum Chemical Factory, the largest in Europe at the time. From 1961 through 1968, a brick-producing factory, a polymer construction materials (polymer) industrial complex, a phosphor (Phosphor#Materials) production plant were built. In 1970-1980s, light industry and mechanical engineering facilities were added to the industrial base of the city. By the end of the 1980s, Sumgayit was already the center of the chemical industry of the USSR. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Sumgayit has remained Azerbaijan’s second biggest industrial center after Baku. WikiPedia:Sumqayit

Sichuan

., 1983, "New ornithopod genus from the Middle Jurassic of Sichuan Basin, China", ''Vertebrata PalAsiatica'' '''21'''(2): 168-171 Discovery and naming In January 1973 the Museum of the Salt Industry at Zigong in Sichuan was warned that during construction activities with a composter at Jinzidang near the Honghe dam inadvertently a dinosaur skeleton had been processed. A team of the museum managed to salvage some heavily damaged remains. Though locally this animal was at first referred to as "Yubasaurus" or "Honghesaurus", in 1979 Beijing professor He Xinlu named and described it as the type species ''Yandusaurus hongheensis''. The generic name is derived from ''Yandu'', the ancient name for Zigong. This name is a contraction of ''yan'', "salt", and ''du'', "capital", occasioned by the fact that Zigong was historically the centre of Chinese salt mining. In this way ''Yandusaurus'' indirectly also refers to the Salt Museum. The specific name (specific name (zoology)) refers to the Honghe river. He X., 1979, "A newly discovered ornithopod dinosaur ''Yandusaurus'' from Zigong, Sichuan". In: ''Contributions to International Exchange of Geology. Part 2. Stratigraphy and paleontology''. Geol. publishing House, Beijing: pp. 116-123 After the Xianbei general Yuwen Tai killed the Northern Wei emperor Yuan Xiu, he installed Yuan Baoju as emperor of Western Wei while Yuwen Tai would remain as the virtual ruler. Although smaller than the Eastern Wei (Eastern Wei Dynasty) in territory and population, Western Wei was able to withstand the attacks from the eastern empire. Due to its better economical conditions, Western Wei was even able to conquer the whole western part of the Liang (Liang Dynasty) empire in the south and occupied the territory of modern Sichuan. In 557 Yuwen Tai's nephew Yuwen Hu deposed Emperor Gong (Emperor Gong of Western Wei) and placed Yuwen Tai's son Yuwen Jue (Emperor Xiaomin of Northern Zhou) on the throne, ending Western Wei and establishing Northern Zhou. The most notable example was the Long March, a massive military retreat in which Mao marched in circles in Guizhou until he had confused the vastly larger armies pursuing him, and was then able to slip through Yunnan and Sichuan, although the retreat was completed by only one-tenth of the force that left for the Long March at Jiangxi. A sensible comparison would be Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House (Battle of Appomattox Court House), though he was never outnumbered to the degree Mao regularly was. Early career Fei Yi was from Jiangxia Commandery (in present-day eastern Hubei). His father died when he was still young and he was raised by his distant relative Fei Boren (費伯仁), who was a cousin of the warlord Liu Zhang (Liu Zhang (warlord)), who controlled Yi Province (present-day Sichuan and Chongqing). Sometime around 211, Liu Zhang sent messengers to escort Fei Boren to his domain, and Fei Yi joined the former as a foreign student into Yi Province. (璋遣使迎仁,仁將禕遊學入蜀。) San Guozhi. Chapter 44, biography of Fei Yi. Fei remained in Yi Province after Liu Bei conquered it in 214 (Liu Bei's takeover of Yi Province). He was comparable with Xu Shulong (許叔龍) and Dong Yun, who were his close friends and scholars in Sichuan. During the Anshi Rebellion In 755, the general An Lushan rebelled against Emperor Xuanzong's rule, and by 756, the forces of his state of Yan (Yan (Anshi)) were approaching the Tang capital Chang'an, forcing Emperor Xuanzong to flee to Jiannan Circuit (劍南, headquartered in modern Chengdu, Sichuan). Emperor Xuanzong's son and crown prince Li Heng (Emperor Suzong of Tang) fled to Lingwu and was declared emperor there (as Emperor Suzong). Emperor Suzong summoned forces from various border outposts, including from Anxi. Li Siye was then the deputy military governor of Anxi, and he initially suggested to the military governor Liang Zai (梁宰) that they wait for more information. Duan Xiushi, however, rebuked him, pointing out that Emperor Suzong's position was desperate. Li Siye changed his mind and agreed with Duan, and Liang subsequently commissioned Li Siye to lead the Anxi forces to rendezvous with Emperor Suzong at Fengxiang (鳳翔, in modern Baoji, Shaanxi), with Duan as his deputy. The ''Zizhi Tongjian'', which provided the account about Li Siye's and Duan's initial disagreement and later agreement, actually indicated that both of them were then serving at Hexi Circuit (河西, headquartered in modern Wuwei (Wuwei, Gansu), Gansu), but as that was inconsistent with all other accounts of where Li Siye and Duan were then serving, it appeared far more likely that they were then still at Anxi. See ''Zizhi Tongjian'', vol. 218 (:zh:s:資治通鑑 卷218). On the way, under LI Siye's orders, the army followed strict discipline and did not cause damage to the people. When LI Siye's army arrived at Fengxiang, Emperor Suzong was very pleased, and had LI Siye serve as a commander of the imperial forces, along with Guo Ziyi and Pugu Huai'en. At this time, it was said that Li Siye's weapon of choice was still his staff, and that he would lead his forces into battle, charging while swinging his staff, and was without rival. He was made the commander of the expedition forces from Anxi and Beiting (北庭, headquartered in modern Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang). *''Selected Examples of Battles in Ancient China'' Writing Team, ''Selected Examples of Battles in Ancient China'', 1st Edition, published by Chinese Publishing House & Distributed by New China Bookstore Publishing House in Beijing, 1981 - 1984. *Yuan, Tingdong, ''War in Ancient China'', 1st Edition, published by Sichuan Academy of Social Science Publishing House & Distributed by New China Bookstore in Chengdu, 1988, ISBN 7805240582 *Zhang, Xiaosheng, ''General View of War of Ancient China'', 1st Edition in Xi'an, published by Long March Publishing House in Beijing & Distributed by New China Bookstore in Beijing, 1988, ISBN 7800150313 (set) Commons:Category:Sichuan WikiPedia:Sichuan Dmoz:Regional Asia China Sichuan

Damascus

son of Al-Adil I, to pre-empt any attempt on Damascus by the Sixth Crusade. It was named ''Qala'at al-Subeiba'', "Castle of the Large Cliff" in Arabic. It was further expanded to contain the whole ridge by 1230, and Baibars strengthened it and added larger towers after 1260. The castle was given to Baibars's second-on-command, Bilik. The new governor started the broad construction activities. When the construction was finished, Bilik memorialized his work and glorified the name of sultan in a 1275 inscription. After the death of Baibars, his son arranged for Bilik to be murdered, apparently because he feared his power. The fortress overlooks the deep, narrow valley separating Mount Hermon from the rest of the Golan Heights, the road linking the Galilee with Damascus, and the former Crusader (Crusader states) town of Banias.
