Vienna

Democratic Party of Austria#First Republic Social Democrats and the Communist Party (Communist Party of Austria) was so small that there was no possibility of revolution there. However, many Communists were working or in exile in Vienna, and Serge befriended some of them, including Georg Lukács, Adolf Joffe and Antonio Gramsci. Serge watched political events in Russia, Germany and elsewhere, but could participate little, and worked on other pursuits, such as literary analysis. Diplomatic and political career After having unsuccessfully contested Hertford (Hertford (UK Parliament constituency)) in 1826, Bulwer joined the Diplomatic Service in 1827 and was sent to Berlin in August that year, to Vienna in April 1829 and then to The Hague in April 1830. In July 1830, he entered the House of Commons (British House of Commons) as MP for the rotten borough of Wilton (Wilton (UK Parliament constituency)) and was sent to Brussels the following month to report on the Belgian Revolution. A year later, he was returned for Coventry (Coventry (UK Parliament constituency)), again in 1833, then for Marylebone (Marylebone (UK Parliament constituency)) in 1835. That year, Bulwer planned to join General Evans (George de Lacy Evans), who was raising a legion to help Isabella II of Spain in the First Carlist War, but was instead sent back to the newly-independent Belgium as secretary of legation. When a general election was called two years later on the death of William IV (William IV of the United Kingdom), Bulwer decided not to contest his current seat for Marylebone and after having commuted between Parliament and his diplomatics posts for seven years, decided to become a full-time diplomat and was sent to Constantinople. Central Bavarian dialects, also known as Central Austro-Bavarian, are spoken in Munich, Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, southern Upper Palatinate, the Swabian district of Aichach, the northern parts of the State of Salzburg (Salzburg (state)), Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Vienna (''see Viennese German'') and the Northern Burgenland). Differences There are noticeable differences in the language within the group, but changes historically occur along a west-east dialect continuum. That means that the languages of Vienna and Munich are very different from each other, but the dialects of any two neighboring towns in between will be quite similar. However, due to influences of the corresponding political centers, discontinuous change is nowadays noticeable along the national border between Austria and Germany. Generally, Viennese (Viennese language) has some characteristics differentiating it from other Bavarian dialects due to the influence of languages spoken by people moving to Vienna from many areas of Austria-Hungary during the 19th century. Leader of the Young Czech Party in Austria-Hungary and later of the National Democratic Party (National Democratic Party (Czechoslovakia)) in Czechoslovakia. A liberal nationalist with close ties to the political elite in Prague and Vienna, Kramář pursued a policy of cooperation with the Austrian (Austria-Hungary) state as the best means of achieving Czech national goals before the First World War, even as he favored closer ties between the Czechs and the Russian Empire. His commitment to this policy of cooperation with the Austrian government ("positive politics" in the parlance of the day) led him to resign his leadership of the Young Czech party in 1914 as the party drifted toward a more nationalist and oppositional stance. During the First World War the Austrian authorities charged Kramář with treason, tried him and ultimately sentenced him to 15 years of hard labour. His imprisonment acted however to galvanise Czech nationalist opinion against the Austrian state. The new Emperor Karl I (Karl I of Austria) released Kramář as part of a general political amnesty in 1917. Chancellor Dolfuss was killed in July 1934, during an attempt by Austria's National Socialist Party (Austrian National Socialism) to topple the regime and proclaim a Nazi government under Ambassador to Rome Anton Rintelen. The assassination of Dollfuss was accompanied by Nazi uprisings in many regions in Austria, resulting in further deaths. In Carinthia (Carinthia (state)) a large contingent of northern German Nazis tried to grab power but were subdued by the loyalist Heimwehr units. The Nazi assassins holding the Federal Chancellery Vienna surrendered after threats to dynamite the building and were executed before the end of July. While Heimwehr leader Starhemberg briefly assumed power as Vice Chancellor, Kurt Schuschnigg was appointed Dollfuss' successor by President Miklas on 29 July, ousting Starhemberg from the government completely in 1936, before surrendering to Nazi pressure in March 1938.
